reciprocity map.

Maps tell stories.

They tell stories about who we were, who we are now, the legacies we carry forward, and how we choose to hold and catalyze them.

Watch as Reciprocity Trusts spreads across the landscape, writing a different story moving forward than the one behind us.Many of us recognize the ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and feel a strong desire to weave reciprocity into the way we live upon shared lands – but we don’t know where to start.

Adding a land acknowledgment to our email signature? Wearing an orange shirt on September 30th? Planting native species in our garden? Learning and using Indigenous placenames? These are all great ideas (and we have more Acts of Reciprocity to inspire you)… but they may not feel complete, because they don’t strengthen our connection to local Nations.

We all want to make a lasting impact that is local, measurable, and meaningful. What we truly want to see is our actions contributing to real projects driven by local First Nations, for local First Nations. We know that there is an element of financial dispossession inherent to settler colonialism and consequently tied to our presence on Indigenous lands, but we don’t know how to address it.

We are all here to stay, but we don’t have to wait for governments to do their part or to guide us in healing our relationships with the ancestral stewards of the lands and waters we love and rely on. We have the power to make real change in our own lives. We have the agency to forge a sense of belonging to place that is based on care and recognition of our interdependencies.
